Fabulous Fall Entertaining

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Fall Newlywed EntertainingWith the crisp cool air of Fall we bid a fond farewell to the Summer BBQ and get ready for indoor entertaining.  Celebrating with seasonal foods/cocktails and friends is a great way to make sure you take a moment to enjoy the world and weather around you. Whether you’re new to marriage and new to cooking for a group or if you’re an old pro at both…we’ve got some great ideas for you!

Set the Tone - Pick up some festive plates or get creative with one of these fall displays for your home (we especially love the acorns in the glass column).  Lighting a fall scented candle can also immediately put guests in a festive mood.

Create a Seasonal Cocktail (or 2) – Signature cocktails easily elevate an event from a gathering to a party!  Consider a this simple yet amazing vanilla pumpkin pie martini for the ladies and some autumn flavored ale for the gentlemen attending.  Here’s a top 10 list of pumpkin beers to point you in the right direction!

Surprise Appetizers - Who doesn’t love an out of the ordinary appetizer?!  Soup shooters are one of the easiest unconventional appetizers.  We suggest this seasonal roasted carrot soup served in fun colored coffee or demitasse cups.  The soup is warming, has a festive fall flavor and is even orange.

Pot Luck - It might sound old fashioned, but having each guest or couple bringing a component of the meal has tremendous upside (especially if they’re good cooks).  You as the hostess get to focus on details like decorating or a fabulous cocktail instead of being overwhelmed…and your guests get to bring something that shows off their talents.  It’s a good idea to create a theme so the recipes gel into a meal.

Pears - Pears are in season and make an outstanding end to any meal.  Consider serving simple poached pears with vanilla ice cream or a pear tart with caramelized pistachios.

Whatever you decide to make, taking time to enjoy Fall with friend and family will end well.  Do you have a favorite fall cocktail or recipe you’d like to share with our readers? We’d love for you to leave a comment.

Do You Need A Vacation From Your Spouse’s Job?!

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Newlywed VacationWhat do you do when you and your spouse seem to be at each other’s throats a little more than usual? Do you find yourselves having the same annoying arguments over and over again? Lately I’ve noticed in my marriage that our reoccurring issues are stemming from one thing—his stress from work! This excessive stress has been coming home with him after leaving the office, and affecting our relationship! Work has been absolutely devouring my husband, consuming his energy, his every thought and every second of the day, so much so that even when we’re “spending time” catching up on our favorite shows on the couch, work calls continue to come in and he is still on the computer! Don’t get me wrong, I certainly appreciate his dedication and passion that he has for his job, but there comes a point where the happy median between work and pleasure needs to be a bit more… defined! In a serious effort to divert further issues and arguments, I called an intervention and demanded a vacation!

I believe there comes a point in every relationship where one, or both parties, becomes unintentionally wrapped up in one thing, and all of the remaining things in life suffer! Sooo, my solution- a romantic getaway! A nice vacation just me and the hubby (and by request- no computers!)  I figured this was the only way get him away from his workload and at the same time will give us a chance to devote sole attention to one another, and spend some much-needed quality, romantic time- alone! Your marriage is a partnership, so it’s important to recognize one another’s needs and to be there to show each other support and love!

Now that we have moved out of the never-ending winter season, I want nothing more than the sand in my feet and a nice dark tan! Here are some getaway ideas and inspiration that I wanted to share with you from one of my fav’s, Travel and Leisure’s Ideas Section and here are some amazing hot-spots, rated the top destinations of 2011!

Do you and your spouse have a go-to place when you just need a romantic getaway? We would love to hear you favorite vacation spots- it always helps to spark new ideas for those in need of a getaway, so please share!

Bridal Glow At Any Age

Monday, January 10th, 2011

30 something brideDid you know the age of the average bride getting married in 2011 is 25.8, up from age 20 in the 1960s*? While that may be the current statistic, the majority of my friends were closer to thirty when they tied the knot. Does this mean the era of the young blushing bride is over? Probably not, but it does mean that there should be a more modern vision of the bride as mature and independent!

Regardless of age, all brides want to beautiful on their wedding day. This can cause slightly older brides to pay more for beauty products and procedures. While we think boob jobs and botox are a bit much for any bride, splurging on a facial or skin care regimen is usually a great idea!

Want that amazing bridal glow…but it’s not in your budget?? Don’t worry! Our January newlywed blog contest is perfect for you! Envy Medical has teamed up with MissNowMrs.com to offer one of our lucky newlywed blog readers the chance to score a Lumixyl Topical Facial Brightening system kit (valued at over $650)! Last Week to Win Our Newlywed Art.com Giveaway!

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Art.com Newlywed GiveawayWhat makes a truly great picture?  Some may argue that there needs to be a specific resolution, great lighting and depth of field for a good photo.  I beg to differ on this one!  Some of my very favorite photos are from my own wedding when the photographer’s lens fogged over due to the humidity.  The result was a series of dreamy images of two newlyweds leaving the church and driving off down the road.  I believe that a great picture needs to provoke a strong emotion in the viewer.  If your favorite photo shows you and your beloved on the beach, but you elbow is cut off….who cares?  Frame that picture and remember all of the fun of that exact moment in your newlywed life!

Do you have a favorite newlywed photo that you’re dying to frame?  Great news: Art.com is giving one of our newlywed blog readers the chance win an 18×24 printed canvas image (or 25×31 framed image) valued at $150 to hang in their home! Talk about an inspiring giveaway! The Photos to Art feature on Art.com will allow our winner to upload an image of her choice (be it wedding, honeymoon or even a favorite family photo) and translate it onto high-quality photographic paper or artist-grade stretched canvas. The result? A high-quality, large-scale, beautifully-finished and ready-to-hang wall art.

Ready to win our awesome November art giveaway? This is the last full week to leave a comment on this, or any of our Newlywed Art Posts on Mondays this month and you’ll be automatically entered to win. Tell us all about the photos from your wedding and honeymoon. We’d love to know what image you’d want to have printed and where you plan to hang it. The randomly selected contest winner will be announced on November 30th!! If we don’t hear back from the winner within 2 weeks, we will randomly select a new winner to make sure someone ends up with this great goodie!

Ode to Thanksgiving Pie

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Newlywed Thanksgiving PieThanksgiving is almost upon us and that means getting together with family and celebrating all of the things you are thankful for with a ton of food.  Whether it’s pumpkin, chocolate meringue, apple or berry; a fabulous slice of pie is the best way to top off a great meal.  As the newlywed addition to your spouse’s family, what better thing to bring to the meal, but a homemade pie?

Here a few recipes to help you make a great impression (and pie) this Thanksgiving as well as show off your personality.

For the Traditionalist:  If you love a classic Thanksgiving meal then make a classic dessert to match it.  Here are a few great recipes for pumpkin pie, apple pie  and berry cobbler.  Your new family is certainly in for a treat!

For the Foodie:  Are you the gracious gourmet?  Flaunt your skills and great taste with a Chocolate Pumpkin Mousse Tart  or, if the oven is in over-drive, why not make a delectable frozen treat?  You’ll have more than a few family fans after making a Cold Lemon Souffle for dessert.

For the Frazzled: Want to bring something to add to dinner, but are short on time?  Here are two great ideas that take an hour or less: whip up a Sweet Potato Pie or try this Pecan Caramel Tart Recipe.  These recipes may be short on prep time but they sure aren’t lacking in flavor or presentation.  No one needs to know that you made them in a matter of minutes!

For the Innovator: Are you the edgy interesting person that loves a new flavor combination?  Show off your taste for adventure with Pumpkin Candy Cups that are not quite pie and not quite candy…but all together scrumptious.  You could also make a Banana Rum Cream Pie that will have your in-laws drooling!

Do you have a signature pie recipe that you plan to make this Thanksgiving?  Please share it with us!

The Hidden Meaning In Your Wedding Bouquet

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Bridal Bouquet DecodedBridal bouquets are the epitome of what your wedding was or will be like. Some are big, pink and covered in crystals, while others are fashioned out of twigs and tiny wildflowers.  Have you ever wondered if there was a deeper meaning to your bouquet?  In fact, there is! Every flower has a meaning that was assigned during the Victorian era so sweethearts could communicate their innermost feelings via blossoms instead of words.

We’ve decoded the bouquet featured in this post, and here’s what we found:

Hydrangea – Understanding

Lily of the Valley – Happiness

Peonies – Ambition & Determination

Cala Lily – Purity

Not too bad for a few flowers chosen out of magazines!  If you’d like to decode your wedding bouquet or even plan the flowers for it specifically, check out this article on The Knot.

Now that you know the hidden meaning of your wedding flowers, our October Giveaway of a custom 11″ x 14″ shadowbox floral keepsake (a $460+ value) is that much better! There’s no better way to preserve your bouquet, than trusting it to Keepsake Floral, the Nation’s leader in special event flower preservation  They will create a custom-crafted work of art you will treasure for years to come!

The Newlywed Golden Rule: Do Unto Others After the Big “I Do”

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

So you’ve arrived home from your fabulous honeymoon, unpacked and started to really feel comfortable in your status as a Mrs..  What do you do now?  Channel all the energy you used to spend on wedding planning into treating those who worked hard to make your Big Day the best!

Throw a brunch for your bridesmaids.  These girls bent over backwards to help you and possibly broke the bank on their dresses, shoes and accessories for your wedding.  You’ll be able to show them how thankful you are for all of their help  and as a bonus you’ll get to use some of the new serving ware from your registry.

Did your Great Aunt Louise fly across the country to watch you walk down the aisle?  What about all the cousins who used vacation days to attend your event?  A cute way to show your appreciation is to include a wedding or honeymoon photo in your thank-you notes.  You know that it will be proudly displayed on mantels, desks and refrigerators across the country.  Also, doting relatives on both sides of the family will discuss how thoughtful you are.

Was your wedding cake outstanding?  Did your florist blow your mind and not your budget?  Take the time to review your wedding vendors online.  It is incredibly beneficial to their businesses and you can feel good knowing you may steer future brides in the right direction.  Places for wedding vendor reviews include: WeddingWire.com, ProjectWedding.com, and OneWed.com.
