Easter Dress Success

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Easter Dress SuccessOne of the best parts of Easter is the excuse to shop for one more Spring dress or ensemble. Can you remember how excited you used to get before Easter as a little girl? The dress, the hat/bow and of course new shoes!  Whether you are a newlywed meeting your spouse’s extended family for the first time or simply going to brunch with close friends, here are a few of our favorite outfits that are festive but won’t leave you looking fussy.

Fashionably Floral – This dress has just enough flowers to be attractive, but not enough to make you look like Great Aunt Susan’s couch!  Add a colorful pump and you’re ready for any Easter occasion.

Best Brunch Bet – Going to a family brunch and not sure what to wear?  This dainty shift has a perfect amount of detail, and can be accessorized dressy or casual (as your event calls for).  Best of all…it’s under $120!

Meet the Family – Did your fiance wait until this Easter to introduce you to his extended family?  Don’t stress,  this dress is absolutely flawless.  Elegant, tasteful and still very young and pretty (like you).  Better yet…it’s 40% off right now!

Easter Egg Hunt Elegance – Maintain a stylish holiday appearance AND your ability to forage for eggs with these classic linen pants. Add a floral blouse or light weight sweater and you’re good to go hunt for some eggs!

Whatever your Easter plans may be, isn’t it wonderful to be a women and have a chance to dress up? Do you have any suggestions for the ideal Easter outfit?  We’d love to hear from you.

Rainy Day Fashion 411

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Rainy Day Fashion IdeasWith March comes the promise of Spring and usually a great deal of rain.  Instead of letting the precipitation depress you, use the rain as an excuse to indulge in some cute accessories and outerwear! Here are a few of our rainy day favorites:

Cute boots- Every girl needs to keep her feet dry, so why settle for a boring pair of goulashes?  Try a super cute pair of rubber boots or even up the ante for a designer pair like these.

Umbrellas – Rihanna sang an entire song about these marvelous inventions and now you can own a silver and pink one with her lyrics on it!  Not so into lyrical umbrellas?  Then show off your personality with a mod monogrammed version.

Raincoats – What better excuse to purchase a new coat than the rainy beginning of Spring?  This is the ultimate classic trench that will work over all of your business attire and still look fresh over an Easter dress.  You can also keep dry and cozy with a floral number that reminds everyone around you of the benefit of all the rain…flowers!

Rain bonnets – Okay, so maybe only your grandma owns a rain bonnet, but it’s not the worst idea to have an emergency one to pull out of your purse during a surprise storm (as long as you don’t know anybody around you).

Hats - Great for keeping your head dry and disguising all the frizz that comes with high humidity. Here’s a fashionable, yet functional rain hat that won’t break the bank or get you laughed out of the office.  Feeling funky?  Try this retro 20’s hat to add some color and fun to a gray day.

What are your favorite Spring accessories?  Do you have a great rain-related outfit to tell us about? Please leave a comment.

Holiday Parties – Ho Ho Ho!

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Newlywed Holiday Attire‘Tis the season for corporate and family holiday parties.  Now let’s talk about not looking like a Ho, Ho, ho as a newlywed or newly engaged lady!  There is definitely a way to look attractive at events, without raising any in-law eyebrows or causing the CEO’s blood pressure to spike.

Here are a few tips to keep you looking your best during the holiday season:

1.       Choose to accent your upper body or lower body with an outfit, not both.  A great mini dress that has sleeves or a or a high neckline will allow your legs to take center stage without causing catcalls. If you’ve got killer arms or cleavage, choose a longer dress or pants and then show A LITTLE skin up top.

2.       Leave the leave-em-on boots at home. Don’t get me wrong, some boots are appropriate with dresses, but if you have patent leather over the knee boots (no matter how fashionable they may be) there are certain call girl connotations that will enter most people’s minds when they meet you.  Frankly, you don’t want to be that girl, especially as someone’s wife or fiancé!

3.       Get your hair done!  Now’s the time to touch up any roots or split ends that you have showing. A quick trip to the salon or some do-it-yourself tricks will have you looking polished and presentable wherever you go.  It will also ensure that you’ll love the way you look in holiday photos and not kick yourself for that hair.  If you already have a few photos you regret, you can use this cool root touch-up software to erase any hair color mistakes.

4.       Go easy on the make-up. Choose to do a smoky eye and neutral lips or play up your lips and do very muted eyes.  This tactic allows one feature of your face to stand out and keeps you from looking like you were hit by the paint truck!  Here’s a great video to give you some tips on balancing holiday make-up.

5.       Smile.  You’re a newlywed or newly engaged and the world is your oyster.  No need to be serious or nervous, just be yourself and let everyone get to know the real you.

With these few tips you should be able to focus on having fun at the flurry of holiday parties you attend.  You can rest assured that you’re presenting yourself in a wonderful way and everyone that meets you will be impressed.

What are you wearing to holiday parties this year and what are you avoiding wearing? We’d love to hear about your outfits and the dreadful ones you saw last holiday season, so please leave a comment!

Make Room For Fall Fashion

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Newlywed Closet Clean OutOne of the things I love most about living in the northeast is the drastic change of seasons, and with this comes that time of year that we all look forward to — rotating our wardrobe! At the end of each summer I am over my summer clothes, and my love for wearing shorts, and I look forward to the new fall fashions of the season! Along with the excitement that comes when it’s time for my wardrobe rotation, I am also faced with a bit of separation anxiety  when trying to decide which clothes I should store in my secret hide-away closet in the spare room, and which clothing items never came off the hanger this year… clearly telling me that I should get rid of them!  I don’t mean ‘throw them away,’ I generally take my clothes to the Salvation Army or another resource where they can be worn again and cherished by someone else. Alternatively- I recently discovered a new love for consignment, or recycled clothing shops where you can sell your slightly-used items, and find some really cute, unique items at a great price of course!

I always struggle with certain items and trying to decide what to get rid of, and I find myself folding them away for just… one more year! This year I’m telling myself, and my husband is telling me too, that I need to make some important decisions to get rid of some cherished items, (or as he would call it, “clutter”) and tidy up the house a bit! I figure while I am going to take on the project of my wardrobe rotation, I should also incorporate some ‘fall cleaning’ at the same time. I did, however warn my husband that I have scheduled my ‘fall cleaning’ the first week of September, and if I am going to tidy up my wardrobe, then he is too! I know that more than half of the crumpled up t-shirts that are in the closet, he doesn’t even remember he has! So I am coming to grips that he is right, and some things I need to let go of, but I think I’m OK with this, as my female mind works — I’m already thinking that I will just have more room for those new fall must-haves! Is anyone else super excited for fall fashion this year? Here are some of my fall favs to help you get excited too, check them out at ELLE & InStyle.

New Wife, New Life: New Wardrobe?

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Immature Shirts On Married MenThe saying goes, “Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover;” but we know that unfortunately it can be hard not to! I was recently hanging clean laundry up in our walk-in closet, when I realized that some of my husband’s clothes looked seriously faded and old.  I thought to myself, “He is in desperate need of new shirts!”  I bet if you took a look at what you’re wearing right now or thought about what you enjoy wearing, you too could find a good excuse for some new attire.  It’s a fact, men do not like to go shopping like women do; which is fine, but there comes a time when you NEED to purchase yourself some new stuff—and I’m not referring to electronics or the latest video game (nice try though)!  After work or on the weekends, you have your go-to outfits of t-shirts and jeans or maybe a pair of sweat pants or mesh shorts that you choose to wear as often as possible.  Chances are that you have a specific dress code required for work, whether it’s a suit and tie or uniform of some sort; which means that the last thing you want is a “uniform” or “dress code” for your home life.  That’s not what I’m alluding to here at all, so no need to worry!  I am, however; suggesting that it might be time to donate some of your go-to t-shirts such as:  your FBI (Female Body Inspector) t-shirt, your I heart Atari t-shirt and your VANS sneakers to a teenage boy in need of your old wardrobe. While these items are a token of your youth, they don’t exactly spell-out mature, sophisticated, married man.

If you can’t imagine getting rid of your favorite childhood t-shirts [that somehow miraculously still fit you], then perhaps you should limit how often you wear them (i.e. wear them only to bed, to the gym,  or better yet, put them away for when you have a son someday).  Your wife loves you and has vowed to love you “til death do you part,” so she’ll no doubt still love you in your Superman t-shirt and jeans—but do her a favor and put on a nice button down shirt, polo or sweater when her family or friends stop by—she’ll greatly appreciate your effort! And if you don’t, you may find that your favorite t-shirt has mysteriously disappeared.  Gentlemen, please do your ladies a favor and get shopping!   Check out your local Outlets for bargain prices on your favorite brands.  Women LOVE shopping, so I’m sure your wife will have no problem being your Personal Shopper—just say the word and fork over the credit card!

What is/was your favorite piece of clothing to wear (i.e. t-shirt, sweatshirt, etc.)?  What does/did it say and why is/was it your favorite?  Share your stories of Batman Boxers or Thunder Cats sweatshirts that your wife had no choice, but to hide from you!  Please leave your comments below and enjoy a laugh with us!

4 Secrets to Wedding Attire Transformations

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Newlywed Wedding Wardrobe AccessoriesAfter attending so many wedding this past year, I sure have stocked up on my fair share of dresses, and with each new invitation that comes in the mail it’s just one more good excuse to go shopping for another one, right?  Not necessarily!  When I’m out dress shopping, I always find myself going after the same color schemes (mostly black of course), and I am now bored with it!  So now that I’ve discovered my lack of versatility I have recently found new, less expensive ways to spend my money, and a new love for accessories!  Instead of trying to cram another dress in my closet, I am stocking on up on accessories to create a new look out of my ‘old’ dresses.  So if you’re like me and have a few upcoming weddings where you may be running into the same groups of friends, here are some ideas for transforming you wedding attire into a completely new look.

So let’s start from the bottom, up! First things first, and that is shoe accenting! If you’re looking to re-create the look of your little black dress, instead of your black pumps, go bold and look for a pattern! Once you have found something to give you a few additional accent color options, choose a color from the shoes and find a belt to match! If you’re going for a sleeker, more elegant look you will want to go for the skinny belts. If the wedding is more casual or even outdoors you may want to try a wide belt.

Next you will want to find a clutch . If your belt is accented with jewels, studs, or has a bow or flower closure, try finding a purse with the same accent—this belt, clutch combo will also will be a perfect closure and help spice up a pair of jeans and a cami for a dinner date night! Check out ELLE, they offer some great accessory ideas.

Onto the jewels! If you wore silver last time you rocked that dress, switch to gold, and maybe even add some color! Choose a color from your shoes, or even match the color of you belt, and look for a bracelet and some earrings to bring everything together.  Check out

Next… hair up or hair down?  This is also going to depend on the date and time of the wedding. If you generally wear your hair down, choose a partial or full up-do this time, if you have some wave to your hair, straighten it. You will be surprised how your entire look can change depending on how you choose to wear your hair.  If you went with a smaller pair of earrings, add some accent to your hair with a flower hair pin or headband.  Some of my fav hair style ideas to share with you are on InStyle.com.

I hope this has given you some inspiration and ideas to see how creative you can be when choosing what to wear to the next wedding you attend.
