The most expensive mistake in a Michigan name change happens in the first ten minutes, before you have filled in a single form. Order your certified marriage certificate from the state office in Lansing and it costs $34, plus a $14 online processing fee, and the state’s own posted turnaround is 10 to 12 weeks. Order the identical document from the county clerk that issued your marriage license and it is $10 to $24, in your hand the same day.

That total assumes you buy the certificate locally. Buy it from Lansing instead and you have added $24 and up to three months to the same name change. Step 1: Buy the Certificate From the County, Not From Lansing
Michigan keeps marriage records in two places, and they are priced nothing alike. The Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics in Lansing holds every Michigan marriage back to 1867 and will sell you a certified copy for a $34 search fee, with a $14 online processing fee on top if you order through VitalChek, which the state names as its only authorized online provider. The county clerk that issued your marriage license holds the same record and sells the same certified copy, usually for $10 to $24, and usually while you wait. That is the version every other agency on this page will accept. Order two copies: Social Security wants one and the Secretary of State wants to see one, and the second copy costs a few dollars rather than another full fee.
One rule decides which county you deal with: it has to be the county where you applied for the license, not where you live now and not where the ceremony happened to be held. Oakland County states it plainly, and every other clerk works the same way. Step 2: Social Security, the One Step You Can Do From Home
Michigan is on the short list of states where Social Security accepts a marriage name change online. SSA’s replacement card policy lists Michigan as yes for a no-change replacement card and yes for a last-name change due to marriage, so you may be able to finish this step in a my Social Security account rather than in a waiting room. Do this before anything at the Secretary of State, because Michigan checks. The SOS “verifies all names and Social Security Numbers before issuing a license or ID”, and if your name and date of birth do not match what Social Security has on file, “your application will be denied”. Step 3: Secretary of State, $9 and In Person
Michigan has no DMV. Licenses, IDs, titles and plates all belong to the Secretary of State, and for a name correction the SOS service card rules out every remote option it offers. Michigan SOS: license or ID name correction

Step 4: The Title, and Why Your Spouse May Have to Come With You

If the car is titled in both names, plan the trip together and do it in the same visit as your license. A change of address filed with the Secretary of State updates your license and your voter registration but never touches a title, and the same is true of a name.
Michigan Income Tax
Michigan does have a state income tax, so this is a real step, but it is the quietest one on the list. Treasury identifies you by your Social Security record, so once Social Security has your married name, your next MI-1040 simply goes in under it. If you need the record changed before you next file, Michigan Treasury eServices is the self-service route: sign in to the Citizen Portal with MiLogin, then More and Manage Names and Addresses. Changes made there generally process within 72 hours. The Individual Income Tax customer contact line is 517-636-4486, where a change is usually completed within 30 days, though the team cannot give you a confirmation number for it.

What Newlyweds Get Wrong in Michigan
Ordering the certificate from the state. It is the top result, it looks official, and it costs $34 and up to twelve weeks. The county clerk that issued your license sells the same certified copy for as little as $10, same day.
Looking for the DMV. Michigan does not have one. Every step below Social Security belongs to the Secretary of State, and searching for the wrong agency is how people end up on the wrong website reading another state’s rules.
Waiting a fixed number of hours after Social Security. Michigan publishes no waiting period. What it publishes is a verification: the SOS checks your name and Social Security number electronically and denies the application if they do not match. Bring the proof from Social Security and the wait takes care of itself.
Turning up alone to fix a jointly owned car. All owners on a title have to appear, or the absent one has to have filed an Appointment of Agent form first. For a same-day instant title there is no agent option at all.
Assuming voter registration follows the license. Addresses sync automatically in both directions. A name does not. In Michigan a legal name change means re-registering.
Leaving the name on the marriage license to chance. Signing the license with your married name is not itself the legal change, and a filed record is difficult to alter afterwards. Decide the exact spelling, hyphenation and middle name you want before the clerk files it.
Voter Registration: You Re-Register, You Do Not Update
Michigan lists a changed legal name alongside moving house as a case where “voters must re-register using updated information”. Fifteen or more days before an election you can do that online, by mail or in person. One quirk of the online system is worth timing around: it asks whether you applied for a duplicate license or ID today, and if you did, it will not let you register until the next day. Which Married Name Michigan Will Print
Michigan is unusually blunt about what your marriage certificate does and does not do. It is evidence of your right to the name. It is not the name change itself. As the Macomb County Clerk puts it, you may sign the license with your spouse’s last name if that is the name you intend to take, but “in order for it to become legal and valid, you must get your name officially changed” with the Secretary of State and the Social Security Administration.

The two rules that live on the card itself
- Your name prints on two lines: first and middle on the top line, last name directly below.
- Michigan’s system allows up to 36 characters in the full name fields, and “if your name exceeds this limit, it will be automatically shortened”.
- Apostrophes cannot be included on a Michigan driver’s license or state ID. Hyphens can.
- Suffixes such as JR, SR and Roman numerals up to X are allowed, and print at the end of the first line.
None of that is a reason to choose a different name. It is a reason to know what the card will say before you stand at the counter, especially if you are combining two long surnames or your family name carries an apostrophe.
Hunting, Fishing and the Rest
- Hunting and fishing. Michigan DNR licenses hang off your customer account, which is keyed to your driver’s license or state ID, so correct the license first. - Vehicle registration. Free, and done in the same Secretary of State visit as the title.
- Banks, cards, employer and everything else. These come after the government steps, once you are holding the new card. Work through the name change checklist rather than doing them in whatever order the post brings them.

I hold a Michigan professional license. Where do I change the name?
Almost every occupational and health license in Michigan runs through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and its MiPLUS portal. Log in, find the license number, and choose Modification to change a name or address. Michigan LARA: apply for or renew a license
Will I get a new paper license?
Yes. A name change triggers a reprint of the license, unlike an address-only change, which does not need one. LARA does not publish the reprint fee on its landing page, so check the fee shown in MiPLUS before you submit rather than budgeting from a figure found elsewhere.
Is there a deadline for professional licenses?
Michigan does not publish a single statewide clock the way some states do, and individual boards set their own expectations. The safe approach is to file the modification in the same week your corrected license arrives, so the name on your credential matches the name on your ID before your next renewal.
So the Michigan order runs: county clerk for the certified copy, Social Security next and possibly online, then one Secretary of State visit for the $9 license and the $15 title, then re-register to vote.
