Hawaii runs a married name change back to front compared with almost every other state, and the difference costs money if you do not know it. Your marriage record is held by the state Department of Health rather than a county office. Your driver license is handled by your county rather than a state agency. And ordering that state record online costs nearly double what the same certificate costs by post.
What a Hawaii Name Change Costs
Cost & Time at a Glance
| Cost | $10.00 for the first certified marriage copy and $4.00 for each extra ordered at the same time. A duplicate driver license is $6 in Honolulu, Maui and Hawaii counties and $7 on Kauai. Social Security is free. Ordering the certificate online adds $7.50 in fees. |
| Time | One visit to your county licensing office, once Social Security is updated and the certified copy is in hand. |
| Deadline | Hawaii publishes none for the name change itself. |
Hawaii is one of the cheaper states for this if you order by post and one of the more annoying if you do not. Once the license is done, our name change checklist covers the banks, cards and accounts no government office tracks.
Step 1: Order the Certificate, but Not Online
Hawaii holds marriage records centrally at the Department of Health, Office of Health Status Monitoring, so it does not matter which island you married on. What matters is how you order. Hawaii DOH: birth and marriage certificates · our guide to certified marriage certificates
| How many copies | By post | Online |
|---|---|---|
| One | $10.00 | $17.50 ($10.00 plus a $2.50 portal fee and a $5.00 identity verification fee) |
| Two | $14.00 | $21.50 |
| Three | $18.00 | $25.50 |
| Each extra ordered at the same time | $4.00 | $4.00, once the per order fees are paid |
The rule of thumb
The $5.00 identity verification fee and the $2.50 portal fee are charged per order, not per copy. That makes online ordering a poor deal for one certificate and a tolerable one for a stack. If you are ordering by post anyway, order three at $18.00 and be done: at four dollars each, extra copies are cheaper than a second trip to the post office.

Step 2: Social Security
Form SS-5, free, and your number never changes. Do this before the county licensing office, because the license application asks you to prove your Social Security number. SSA: change your name · our Social Security name change guide
One quirk in Hawaii’s own document rules that saves arguments at the counter: for Social Security documents, a middle name and suffix are not considered part of the legal name and may be abbreviated, omitted or even misspelled. It is the first and last name that must match.
Hawaii has 4 Social Security offices across the islands, the smallest network in the country, so check the hours before you travel:
| Office | Address | City | ZIP | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hilo | 111 E Puainako St | Hilo | 96720 | (855) 572-4860 |
| Honolulu | 300 Ala Moana Blvd | Honolulu | 96850 | (855) 572-4879 |
| Kapolei | 970 Manawai Street | Kapolei | 96707 | (855) 572-4866 |
| Wailuku | 2200 Main Street | Wailuku | 96793 | (855) 572-4863 |
Step 3: Your County, Not the State
There is no Hawaii state DMV counter for this. Each county runs its own driver licensing through an examiner of drivers, and the fee is not the same across the islands. You must present an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate to connect your birth name to your current legal name. Hawaii DOT: driver licensing · our driver license name change guide
| County | Covers | Duplicate license |
|---|---|---|
| Honolulu | Oahu | $6 |
| Hawaii | The Big Island | $6 |
| Maui | Maui, Molokai, Lanai | $6 |
| Kauai | Kauai, Niihau | $7 |
For a REAL ID compliant credential Hawaii wants documentary proof of your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, legal presence and Hawaii principal residence address. The examiner of drivers has discretion to accept additional documents as proof of principal residence, so call ahead if your paperwork is unusual rather than queueing twice. Voter Registration, After the License
Hawaii’s online system at olvr.hawaii.gov handles a name change directly, and the same Voter Registration Application covers first time registration, name change, address change and signature update. To do it online you must supply a Hawaii driver license or Hawaii state ID plus your Social Security number. Hawaii online voter registration · Hawaii Office of Elections: registration
That requirement sets the order for you. Update the license at your county office first, then the voter record online. Attempted the other way round, the system has nothing in your married name to verify you against.
Professional Licenses
Hawaii licensees go through the Professional and Vocational Licensing Division of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, using its Address / Name Change Request form. You can complete it as a fillable form online or print it legibly in dark ink. DCCA PVL: address and name change requests
Attach a copy of your marriage license, divorce decree or court order. The division is explicit that you should not send originals, which matters here because your certified copies cost real money and Hawaii will not post them back to you.
Questions Hawaii Newlyweds Actually Ask
Does it matter which island I married on?
No. Hawaii holds marriage records centrally at the state Department of Health, so a wedding on Kauai and a wedding on Oahu produce a certificate from the same office. The island only matters for your driver license, because that is county business and Kauai charges a dollar more.
Do I have to wait for my new Social Security card to arrive?
You need to be able to prove your Social Security number at the county licensing office. Update Social Security first so the federal record is right, and ask your county what it will accept as proof before you travel, because the examiner of drivers has discretion over documents.
My middle name is spelled differently on my Social Security paperwork. Is that a problem?
Hawaii’s own document rules say a middle name and suffix are not considered part of the legal name for Social Security documents and may be abbreviated, omitted or misspelled. It is the first and last name that must line up.
How many certified copies do I actually need?
Plan on three. Social Security wants to see one, your county licensing office wants an original or certified copy, and at least one agency will keep or delay returning what you send. At $4.00 for each additional copy ordered at the same time, the third one costs less than the postage of a second order.
Is there a deadline?
Hawaii does not publish one for a married name change. That is genuinely different from states that attach a statutory clock to the license, and it means you can sequence this around your own calendar rather than the state’s.
The Federal Steps and Everything Else
IRS. Form 8822 is free and is what the IRS uses to record a new name, despite being titled a change of address form. Optional, and worth doing so your return and your Social Security record agree.
Passport. Federal rather than Hawaiian, and free within a year of issue. Which form applies depends on how long you have held it. passport name change guide
Vehicle registration. Handled by the same county finance departments that run driver licensing, so ask while you are already at the counter rather than making a separate trip.
Banks, cards, employer, insurers. After the license. Work through the name change checklist in order rather than reacting to whatever post arrives.
Hawaii in Order
- Order certified copies from the state Department of Health. By post: $10.00 for one, $18.00 for three. Online adds $7.50 in per order fees.
- Social Security, form SS-5, free.
- Your county examiner of drivers with the certified copy. $6, or $7 on Kauai.
- Voter registration online at olvr.hawaii.gov, which needs the new license.
- DCCA licensing form if you hold a professional license. Send a copy, never the original.
- IRS Form 8822 and the passport whenever it suits you.
That is the whole state process, and the only place Hawaii will quietly overcharge you is the online certificate order. The longer tail is everything outside government: banks, cards, insurers, employer records and airline profiles, which matter more here than most places given how much of island life runs on flights. Our name change checklist covers those, and you can compare how other states handle it if you have moved recently.
