Lady Gaga Intends to Change Her Name After Marriage

Lady Gaga name change

Lady Gaga name change?! What’s this? Lady Gaga, who’s real name Stefani Germanotta, has announced that she will take fiancé Taylor Kinney’s last name after their marriage…making her the future Mrs. Stefani Kinney!  As a star know for her extreme fashion taste and publicity stunts, it is interesting to see her do something so conventional as change her maiden name to her maiden name.

The fact that Lady Gaga is 29 and a celebrity would skew her towards keeping her maiden name, but she has also been quoted as being “old fashioned” about love and she is technically known by her stage name.  Gaga is on the celebrity name-change train along with Angelina Jolie Pitt, Amal Clooney and Ashley Simpson.

Do the name change choices of these prominent women show an increased preference for women to change their names or are they in keeping with the fact that 88.6.% of U.S. women change their names after marriage?

It’s an interesting question, and I believe data is starting to show that the mindset of millennial brides is different from those of Gen X and Gen Y.  Many site the idea of changing their names as a way to show that they are “all in” in their marriages.

Curious how to change your name after marriage? The MissNowMrs app or online service can save you 13 hours of stress and hassle!

Married Name Change News in Nebraska

Newlywed in Nebraska and considering your married name change options?  You may want to wait a few months, as senator Sara Howard is proposing a few changes to the current state name change policy.  Currently couples in Nebraska have very limited name change options.  Only brides are able to change their names after marriage (using the married name change process) and they are unable to take their maiden names as their middle names.

Soon-to-be-married Senator Howard (her wedding is in October, and no she’s not opting to change her name) would like to make married name change more flexible for newlyweds in her state.  She’s proposing that men should be able to hyphenate last names with their spouse or take their spouse’s last name after marriage.  Senator Howard also wants to allow women in Nebraska to take their maiden names as their middle names, which is a very popular name-change trend in 2015.  These changes may take time, but eventually will allow a great deal more flexibility when it comes to picking a married name as a newlywed.

Curious what the best married name change option is for you?  Play the MarriedNameGame and let its patent-pending algorithm selection your ideal last name option(s), and rest assured that it also factors in your state’s laws around married name change options!

Married at First Sight’s Jamie Otis Changes Name

Did you hear about Married at First Sight’s Jamie Otis changes name? A year after her marriage, Jamie Otis took her spouse’s last name of Hehner.  Why did she choose to change her name after marriage?  Much like any other bride, Jamie had a few factors that influenced her name change decision.  Not knowing her father made her less attached to her maiden name, and therefore less inclined to keep it as a married woman.  She also cites that she wants to have the same last name as her children, when she has them.

Another interesting married name change factor: the “final commitment effect”, meaning her name change shows that she is completely committed to a relationship started on a socially experimental show: Married at First Sight.  More and more brides today are seeing married name change as a way to show that they’re “all in” in their marriages.  It’s an interesting new name change factor.  If you’re curious which married name option is right for you, try playing the MarriedNameGame!

We LOVE how Jamie surprised her husband with her name change on their anniversary!  She put her name change notification from Social Security in a small box and had him open it last.  He cried and she cried after he opened the box and realized they now shared a last name…how adorable is that?

Were you surprised to hear about Jamie Otis changes name? If so, let us know in a comment!

Your Married Name: Would You Keep It If Your Marriage Ended?

Your Married Name

Would you keep your married name if your married ended? As a name change expert, I do a great deal of reading on the topic of (surprise) married name change.  Once in a while the concept of married names and divorce comes up.  As this is a newlywed blog, we don’t mention the “D word” very often.  However, married name change and its ramifications (including after a marriage sadly ends) is something everyone newly engaged or newly married woman should consider.

Married Name Change

Changing your name after marriage is a very personal choice.  If you do opt to become a Mrs., your name changes legally and stays changed. Unless, you pass away or opt to legally change it again based on another marriage, divorce or a whim.  This is not a decision to be made lightly as it involves mountains of paperwork to accomplish and mountains more to change if you change your mind.  Have you made up your mind and decided in favor of changing your name?  Save 13 hour of stress and hassle with the MissNowMrs is an app and online name change service.

Help Me Change My Name

The name change article I read was answering someone’s question as to why a divorced woman would choose to keep her married name post divorce.  While a new married name is new when you’re changing your business cards and monograms, it becomes part of your identity as you build your career, family and life.  At some point your new name is simply your name.   Many women opt to keep married names post divorce to have the same name as their children or continue to keep the name recognition that they have built in their area of work or expertise.  Some women keep their married names because that is what they are comfortable with or even to spite their ex husbands.

Divorce Name Change

Name change post divorce is a very similar process to married name change. Instead of using a marriage certificate to file for your new name, you will need a legal name change order in your divorce decree.  That is the legal document that allows your legal name change after your divorce is finalized.  Should you be ready to get your maiden name back, services like GetYourNameBack streamline the process for a nominal fee.

Once again, name change proves to be a highly personal choice. There are many factors regardless of whether you are taking/adding your spouse’s last name or taking your maiden name back. Choose wisely ladies!
