How to Change to Your Married Name in California

How to Change Your Name in California

Just married in California? Congratulations. The Golden State makes a married name change straightforward, with one catch worth knowing up front: you have to lock in your new name on your marriage license before the wedding. Here is exactly how to do it, in order, with what it costs and how long it takes.

Ready for a New Name? Order Now!

What a California Name Change Costs and How Long It Takes

The honest math for a standard married name change in California:

StepCalifornia cost
Social Security card (SS-5)Free
Certified marriage certificate copies$19 to $21 each, by county
Driver’s license$39
Vehicle title (Form REG 227)$0

Core out-of-pocket runs about $40 to $80, with the $39 license as the main cost. A passport update adds more only if yours is over a year old.

Time: plan for a few weeks. Your new Social Security card takes about 2 to 3 weeks, and it must show your new name before the DMV will process your license. A mailed title update takes 10 to 30 business days.

Step 1: Get Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

In California your certified marriage certificate comes from the County Recorder (Clerk-Recorder) of the county where you got your marriage license; the state vital records office can also issue one. Order 2 or 3 certified copies, since Social Security and the DMV each want to see an original. As of January 2026 the fee is $19 per copy in most counties ($21 in Alameda), listed by county below.

Step 2: Update Social Security First

Social Security is free and the same in every state: complete form SS-5, show your certified marriage certificate, and your new card arrives in about 2 to 3 weeks. Do this first, because the California DMV electronically verifies your name against Social Security and will not issue your license until your SSA record shows the new name. Details: ssa.gov.

Step 3: Update Your California Driver’s License

Head to a California DMV office in person. Here is your checklist:

  • Update Social Security first and wait for your new card. The DMV verifies against Social Security and will not proceed without it.
  • Bring a certified marriage certificate.
  • Pay the $39 license fee.
  • Expect a new photo and thumbprint, since it is done in person.
  • Book an appointment at dmv.ca.gov to skip the wait, since walk-in waits can top two hours. Or use the free Get in Line virtual queue.
  • Ask about REAL ID at the same visit. For REAL ID, also bring a passport or certified birth certificate and two printed proofs of California residency.

Step 4: Update Your Vehicle Title

Good news for California car owners: a title name change is free. Use Form REG 227:

  1. Complete Form REG 227 with your new name.
  2. Attach a certified marriage certificate, your updated Social Security card, your current California title, and your California license in the new name.
  3. Mail it to the DMV.
  4. Allow 10 to 30 business days.

California Marriage Certificate Offices by County

Order certified copies from the County Recorder that issued your marriage license:

CountyCertified copy feeOrder from
Los Angeles$19Registrar-Recorder
San Diego$19Recorder-Clerk
Orange$19Clerk-Recorder
Riverside$19Clerk-Recorder
San Bernardino$19Recorder-Clerk
Sacramento$19Clerk-Recorder

Other California Licenses to Update

A few state-issued credentials need your new name too:

CredentialWhat to do
Notary publicFile a Name Change Application with the Secretary of State for an amended commission, then file a new oath and bond and get a new seal within 30 days.
Concealed carry (CCW)Submit a modification to the sheriff or police department that issued your permit (not wherever you live now). Update your license first, then upload your new license and marriage certificate. Fees vary by county (about $10, e.g. Los Angeles).
Hunting and fishingEmail the CDFW License and Revenue Branch at LRB@wildlife.ca.gov with your old and new names and your GO ID. Keep your existing record so your preference points stay attached.

Update Your Voter Registration

Re-register under your new name at RegisterToVote.ca.gov. A DMV name change does not automatically update your voter registration. The deadline is 15 days before an election.

California State Taxes

California has a state income tax, but there is no separate name-change form. Once you have updated Social Security, file your next Franchise Tax Board return under your new name (enter your prior last name in the return’s Prior Name field), and give your employer an updated DE 4. To fix an account issue sooner, call the FTB at 800-852-5711.

California Name Change Tips

The one thing California newlyweds miss

  • Decide your new name before the wedding. California lets you take your spouse’s last name, hyphenate, or use your maiden name as your middle name, but only on the marriage license when it is issued. You cannot add or change it after the ceremony without going to court.
  • Do Social Security first. The DMV will not process your license until your SSA record shows the new name.
  • Your car title change is free. Do not pay for a new title unless you want one.

Which Names Can You Take in California?

Spouse’s last name, hyphenated, or maiden name as your middle name: Yes, chosen on your marriage license under California’s Name Equality Act. A certified marriage certificate is your legal proof.

The catch: you must choose the new name on the license before the ceremony. It cannot be added or amended afterward.

A new first name, or a name not offered on the license: this needs a court petition in Superior Court.

Licensed Professional? Update Through BreEZe

Most California professions, from nursing to real estate to cosmetology, are licensed under the Department of Consumer Affairs through the BreEZe online system.

  • A single name-change submission in BreEZe notifies every participating board and bureau, so you file once.
  • Do it within 30 days, with a certified marriage certificate. DCA name change details.

Changing your name is one of the happiest kinds of paperwork there is. Take it one step at a time, in the order above, and you will be signing your new California name before you know it.

How to Change Your Name in South Carolina

Just married in South Carolina? Congratulations. A Palmetto State name change is quick and inexpensive, but the clock is tight: you have only 10 days to update your license. Here is exactly how to do it, in order, with what it costs and how long it takes.

Ready for a New Name? Order Now!

South Carolina Name Change: Quick Answers

How fast do I have to update my license?

Just 10 days, the shortest deadline in the country. Line up your Social Security and DMV steps back to back.

Do I need my new Social Security card first?

Yes. You must update Social Security at least 48 hours before your SCDMV visit; the DMV verifies your name and number against Social Security.

Can I just walk into the DMV?

Often not. Many SCDMV branches are appointment-only now, so book at dmv.sc.gov before you go, especially with a 10-day clock.

Do I need a court order to take my spouse’s last name?

No. Your marriage license works, and it can be used once to change your middle name, last name, or both.

Step 1: Get Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

In South Carolina your certified marriage license comes from the Probate Court in the county where you got your license (the state health department can also issue one). Order 2 or 3 certified copies. They are inexpensive, about $5 to $8 by county, listed further down this page.

Step 2: Update Social Security First

Social Security is free and the same in every state: complete form SS-5, show your certified marriage certificate, and your new card arrives in about 2 to 3 weeks. Do this first, and remember South Carolina’s rule that your Social Security update must be done at least 48 hours before the DMV. Details: ssa.gov.

South Carolina has 17 Social Security field offices. Find the one nearest you:

Step 3: Change Your SC Driver’s License

The clock is tight, so plan ahead. Here is your checklist:

  • Update Social Security at least 48 hours before your visit (the DMV verifies against Social Security).
  • Complete SCDMV Forms 4057 and 447-NC.
  • Bring your certified marriage license.
  • Book an appointment at dmv.sc.gov, since many branches are appointment-only.
  • Pay $10 ($25 if you also get your first REAL ID), all within 10 days of your name change.
Ready for a New Name? Order Now!

Step 4: Your Vehicle Records

Good news for South Carolina car owners: when the SCDMV processes your name change, your vehicle records update on their own.

WhatDetail
Vehicle record + registrationUpdate automatically, with new cards mailed to you. No form and no fee.
New paper title (optional)Only if you want a reissued paper title in your new name: use Form 400 with acceptable ID; $15.

Which Names Can You Take in South Carolina?

Your marriage license can be used once per marriage to change your middle name, your last name, or both, so taking your spouse’s surname, hyphenating, or moving your maiden name to the middle position are all covered without a court. It cannot change your first name, and a first-name change or any later change needs a court order. The order matters: update Social Security first, wait 48 hours, then bring the license to the DMV.

South Carolina State Taxes

South Carolina has a state income tax, and the Department of Revenue has its own step (it does not just follow Social Security). In MyDORWAY, go to More, then Manage Names & Addresses, select your name under Legal, choose Change this name, and upload your marriage license. No MyDORWAY account? File Form SC8822I. Then give your employer an updated SC W-4.

South Carolina Marriage Certificate Offices by County

Order certified copies from the county Probate Court that issued your license. The statewide base fee is $5; some counties add a small processing or research fee:

CountyCertified copy feeNotes
Greenville$5.50+$1.50 online
Richland$8online only
Charleston$5online only
Horry$5+$10 research for pre-1994
Spartanburg$5in-person cash only
Lexington$5
Berkeley$5
Dorchester$11.50

Licensed Professional? Update With LLR

Most South Carolina professions, from nursing to real estate, are licensed by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR).

  • Submit a written name-change request with a copy of your marriage certificate to your board.
  • Or upload it online through Manage My License (Document Submission).

What a South Carolina Name Change Costs and How Long It Takes

The honest math for a standard married name change in South Carolina:

StepSouth Carolina cost
Social Security card (SS-5)Free
Certified marriage certificate copies$5 to $8 each, by county
Driver’s license$10 ($25 for a first REAL ID)
Vehicle records$0 (automatic; $15 only for a new paper title)

Core out-of-pocket runs about $15 to $35 – South Carolina is one of the cheaper states.

Time: your new Social Security card takes about 2 to 3 weeks, and it must be updated at least 48 hours before the DMV. Then visit the DMV within the 10-day window (book the appointment early).

Other South Carolina Licenses to Update

A few state-issued credentials need your new name too:

CredentialWhat to do
Concealed Weapon Permit (CWP)Request a replacement from SLED: online in the SLED Services Portal, or mail Form R-02 with your name-change document. A replacement keeps your existing 5-year dates, and your old permit stays valid until the new one arrives.
Notary publicFile the Secretary of State’s Change in Status form ($10, signed before another notary) within 45 days, then enroll with your county Clerk of Court and get a new seal.
Hunting and fishingUpdate your name in your South Carolina DNR (SCDNR) license account.

Update Your Voter Registration

Update your name at scVOTES.gov once your SC license or ID shows your new name, or mail a change form to your county board. The deadline is 30 days before an election.

Changing your name is one of the happiest kinds of paperwork there is. Take it one step at a time, in the order above, and you will be signing your new South Carolina name before you know it.

Minnesota gives you thirty days to change the name on your license, by statute. It also tells you to finish with Social Security first, and Minnesota is one of the states where Social Security cannot be done online. Those two rules were written by different offices and they do not fit together comfortably, which is why the order you do things in matters more here than the fees do.

What a Minnesota Name Change Costs

Cost & Time at a Glance

Step 1: Certified Copies, $9 at the County Recorder

$9.00 per certified copy at your county recorder, which is where a Minnesota marriage record lives. Buy two or three while you are there: Social Security wants one, DVS wants one, and a bank will ask. Example county fee schedule

And one number worth knowing even though it is not a name-change cost. A Minnesota marriage license is $125, but Minn. Stat. 517.08 subd. 1b says “the civil marriage license fee for parties who have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education is $50.” That is a $75 saving available to anyone who has not applied yet, and it is the largest single number a Minnesota couple can move.

Our guide to certified marriage certificates covers what “certified” has to look like.

Step 2: Social Security, and Minnesota Cannot Do It Online

Do this one first, and start it early, because it is the step that eats your thirty days. DVS states the rule flatly: “If you have a Social Security number (SSN), you need to change your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) first.” Minnesota DVS: change your name

And Minnesota is not one of the states that lets you file it over the internet. Social Security’s internet replacement card policy marks Minnesota yes for a plain replacement card with no change to it, and no for a last name change due to marriage. That means form SS-5, by post or in person, and a real wait for the card.

It is free, your number never changes, and you will need a certified copy of your marriage record. Social Security name change · our Social Security name change guide

Step 3: The License, $26 and a 30 Day Clock

$26.00. The DVS fee table lists “Duplicate driver’s license – all classes” at $26. If you have read $12.75 anywhere, including on the older version of this page, that number is years out of date, and so is the old advice that the office takes cash or checks only. Minnesota DVS fee table

30 days, and it is in the statute, not a guideline. Minn. Stat. 171.11 says that on a change of name “such person shall, within 30 days thereafter, apply for a duplicate driver’s license upon a form furnished by the department and pay the required fee.” Note what starts the clock: the name change, not the arrival of your new Social Security card.

In person, at any office that offers license or ID renewals, with a new photo taken. DVS offers a pre-application you can fill in beforehand to shorten the visit.

Bring your current license or ID plus one of three documents: a certified marriage certificate (or a marriage license with a certified recorded marriage date), a certified divorce decree that specifies the name change, or a certified court order that specifies it. Our driver license name change guide covers the counter visit.

Step 4: The Car, Where the Fee Is Not the Bill

Minnesota publishes a duplicate title fee of $7.25, and if you budget $7.25 you will be surprised at the counter. Every title transaction also carries a $12.00 filing fee, a $2.25 technology surcharge, and, at a deputy registrar, a $1.00 local office surcharge. Minnesota DVS vehicle fees

Add it up and a corrected title is about $22.50. The surcharges are more than double the fee they are attached to, which is exactly the sort of thing that turns a quick errand into an irritating one if nobody told you first. The title fee proper, for reference, is $8.25 on initial applications and transfers.

Which Minnesota Office Does What

Five different counters, none of which talk to each other. This is the whole map:

Licensed Professional?

Nurses (Minnesota Board of Nursing)

The Board handles name and address changes, and charges $20.00 for a replacement document: “submit the request for document replacement form with a fee of $20.00.” Minnesota Board of Nursing: replacement documents

We are not going to quote you a nursing deadline, because the Board does not publish one we could read. Notify them when your Social Security record updates, and ask what they want enclosed.

Every other Minnesota board sets its own clock

This is worth seeing once, because it explains why there is no single answer. The chiropractic board’s rule says “a licensee who has changed names must notify the board in writing within 30 days of the change,” and that the change “will be reflected on the next license or registration certificate issued to the licensee” unless you pay for one sooner. Minn. R. 2500.1105

That is one board. Minnesota has dozens, each with its own rule, its own fee and its own idea of what counts as proof. None of them hear about your marriage from anybody else, so check each one you hold a license with.

What Newlyweds Get Wrong in Minnesota

Does the 30 days start when my new Social Security card arrives?

No, and this is the trap. Minn. Stat. 171.11 attaches the thirty days to the change of name itself. Because Minnesota cannot file the Social Security change online, and DVS wants Social Security done first, the mail time comes out of your window. File SS-5 the week of the wedding.

Is the license really $26? I have seen $12.75.

$26.00 is the current published DVS fee. $12.75 is an old figure that has been copied around the internet for years, including by the previous version of this page, and it will not pay for your license.

Can I change my name at DVS without doing Social Security first?

DVS says no. Their instruction is that you change it with the Social Security Administration first, then bring the certified document to the counter. Arriving in the other order is a wasted trip.

Will my voter registration just update?

No. In Minnesota a name change means you re-register, not that an existing record is edited. It is free and takes a few minutes online.

I have a permit to carry. Is that automatic?

Not remotely, and this is the only part of a Minnesota name change with a criminal penalty attached. You have thirty days to notify the sheriff who issued it, and failing to is a petty misdemeanor.

Minnesota Income Tax

One letter, no fee: tell Minnesota Revenue in writing that your name has changed, enclosing a copy of the legal documentation, at Minnesota Revenue, Mail Station 4410, St. Paul, MN 55146-4410, or fax it to 651-556-5155. Minnesota Revenue: changing your address or name

Which Married Name Can You Take in Minnesota?

Minnesota decides this earlier than most states do: on the marriage license application. Minn. Stat. 517.08 subd. 1a requires the application to state “the full names the parties will have after the civil marriage is entered into”. Whatever goes on that form is what your certificate shows, and what your certificate shows is what every counter afterwards will accept. Work through it in this order:

Where you areWhat Minnesota does
You have not applied for the license yetThis is your moment. Decide the married name now and put it on the application, because the application is what fixes it. Ask your county recorder what forms of name they will record before you write it down.
You are married and the certificate shows the name you wantNothing else is needed. The certified copy is your proof at Social Security, DVS and the bank. No court, no petition, no filing fee.
You are married and the certificate does not show itThe marriage route has done all it can. A name your record does not show is a district court matter under Minn. Stat. ch. 259.
Either of you has a felony convictionMinnesota closes the marriage route entirely: “if one party to the civil marriage license has a felony conviction under Minnesota law or the law of another state or federal jurisdiction, the party may not change the party’s name through the marriage application process.” That is unusual, it is in the statute, and it catches people by surprise.

If you are unsure what your own county will record, ring the recorder before the application rather than after the wedding. Counties are the ones writing the name onto the document.

Voter Registration

You re-register; you do not update. A Minnesota name change means filing a fresh voter registration, not editing an old one. It is free, and it takes a few minutes at mnvotes.gov. Minnesota Secretary of State: register to vote

Deadlines: 11:59 p.m. 21 days before Election Day online, and 5 p.m. 21 days before on paper.

And if you miss them, you are still fine. Minnesota is an Election Day registration state: you can register at your polling place on the day, or at an early voting location before it. Very few states give you that safety net, so a missed deadline here is an inconvenience rather than a lost vote. Register on Election Day

The Minnesota Notice With a Penalty Attached

  • Permit to carry: 30 days, and failing to tell the sheriff is a crime. Minn. Stat. 624.714 subd. 7a states that “within 30 days after changing the permit holder’s legal name or permanent address… the permit holder must notify the issuing sheriff of the change.” Failure to notify is a petty misdemeanor, maximum fine $25 for a first offense. The notice itself is free.
  • A replacement card is optional, and worth taking anyway. Counties publish $10 for a new card. You are not required to get one, but a dealer will refuse a sale when the name on your permit and the name on your ID do not match, which defeats the point of carrying it. Example county permit-to-carry name change
  • Everything else with your name on it. Nothing above reaches your employer, your bank, your insurers or your utilities. Our name change checklist is that list.

So the Minnesota order runs: certified copies at $9 from the county recorder, SS-5 to Social Security immediately because the thirty days is already running, then DVS in person for the $26 duplicate, then the deputy registrar for the car, one letter to Revenue, a fresh voter registration, and your sheriff inside thirty days if you hold a permit to carry. Our name change checklist covers the banks and accounts that follow, and you can compare how other states handle it if you have moved recently.

How to Change Your Name in Missouri

How to change your name in Missouri after marriage

Just married in Missouri? Two things on this page are worth more than everything else combined. The first is where you order your certified marriage copies, because the state cannot sell you the document your bank and Social Security actually want. The second is a fee waiver most Missouri newlyweds walk straight past, and it can make the license half of this trip free.

The Missouri Mistakes That Cost People Money

Ordering your marriage certificate from the state

This is the big one, and it is specific to Missouri. The state health department will send you a Certified Statement Relating to Marriage, which lists the names, the date and the county where the marriage was recorded. That is not the same thing as your marriage certificate. Missouri says so plainly: an actual certified copy of the original marriage certificate may only be obtained from the Recorder of Deeds in the county that issued your license. Order from the state and you will pay for a document you then have to replace.

Paying a duplicate license fee you did not owe

If you have never held a REAL ID compliant license or ID, Missouri waives the duplicate fee one time when you upgrade, and the Department of Revenue confirms that personal information may be changed as part of that same transaction. Your name change is exactly that. RSMo 302.185 is the statute: the department shall not collect a duplicate license fee for a REAL ID card issued to someone who has never had one. You still owe the license office processing fee, but the $7.50 duplicate fee comes off. Do a plain duplicate today and upgrade later and you have spent the waiver on nothing.

Assuming you can move your maiden name into the middle slot

In plenty of states that is a free move with a marriage certificate. Not on a Missouri license. The Missouri Driver Guide is blunt about it: a middle name change requires a court order. The Department of Revenue accepts your certified marriage certificate for a last name change. If your plan is Firstname Maidenname Marriedname on the license itself, budget for the courthouse.

Trusting the $14.50 figure for your car

The Department of Revenue’s own marriage name-change page still quotes $14.50 for a motor vehicle title. That was the old $8.50 title fee plus a $6.00 processing fee. The processing fee is now $9.00 under RSMo 136.055, so bring $17.50. Turning up $3 short at the counter is a wasted trip.

Buying a single certified copy

At $9 or $10 a copy, the second and third are cheap insurance. Social Security wants to see one if you cannot use the online route, the license office wants to see one, and paperwork does go missing.

Paying for a duplicate when a renewal was due anyway

The Department of Revenue points this out itself: if your license is within 184 days of expiring, you may be able to renew early instead of buying a duplicate now and a renewal a few months later.

Step 1: Certified Copies From the Recorder of Deeds

Missouri keeps marriage records with the county Recorder of Deeds that issued your marriage license, not with a health department and not with the county where you now live. If you were licensed in Jackson County and moved to Springfield, Jackson County still holds your record.

The price barely moves across the state, and there is a statutory reason. RSMo 451.151 sets a $7 fee for every certified copy of a marriage license, collected by the recorder and passed to the children’s trust fund. Each recorder adds its own copy and certification charge on top, which lands almost every county at $9 or $10. The county table further down has the ones people ask about most.

The same statute prices the marriage license itself at $20, which matters only if you are reading this before the wedding. And to be completely clear about the state route: the health department’s Certified Statement Relating to Marriage is a real document, it is just not the certified copy of the certificate that agencies ask for. Our guide to getting a certified marriage certificate covers what a valid copy has to show.

Step 2: Social Security, and Missouri Lets You Do It Online

Start here, because the license office checks your Social Security record while you stand there. The Department of Revenue’s document requirements describe an electronic verification inquiry to Social Security, and if that check fails you are asked for a physical Social Security document or sent to Social Security to sort it out. Doing Social Security first is what keeps that from happening.

The card is free, and Missouri is one of the states where the change can be made online through a personal my Social Security account. Per the Social Security rules you need to be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen with citizenship shown on your Social Security record, holding a valid Missouri license or state ID, with a U.S. mailing address and a state issued marriage certificate, and changing only your last name. Anything else is Form SS-5, by mail or in person, and also free. Our Social Security name change guide has the full federal process.

Step 3: Your Missouri Driver License

What it costs, and why the number looks odd. RSMo 302.185 sets the duplicate license fee at $7.50 for ordinary classes. The license office processing fee sits on top of it: $9 if your last license was a three year issuance, $18 if it was a six year one. That is where the published totals come from: $16.50 and $25.50 for a standard Class F duplicate.

The waiver worth knowing about. Never had a REAL ID? The $7.50 duplicate fee is waived once when you upgrade, and your name change can ride along in the same transaction. You still pay the $9 or $18 processing fee. It does not apply if you are also changing license class or adding endorsements or restrictions. Missouri REAL ID

What to bring. Your certified marriage certificate, plus the documents proving identity, Social Security number, and Missouri residency listed in the Department of Revenue requirements. You apply for a duplicate license in the new name.

It is an in person job. A new signature is captured and a new photo may be taken, so this is not a mail or web transaction. Missouri license offices are contracted rather than run by the state, so hours and local practice vary: find yours on the official office locator and check before you drive over.

Last name only. The marriage certificate covers your surname. A middle name change needs a court order, which is the Missouri quirk covered further down.

Step 4: Your Car

$17.50, and Missouri handles the car as a title job. An $8.50 title fee under RSMo 301.190 plus the $9.00 processing fee under RSMo 136.055. Watch out for the older $14.50 figure still printed on the department’s marriage page: that used the retired $6 processing fee.

What you hand over. A completed Form 108, Application for Missouri Title and License, your existing title, and proof of the name change. Do it at any license office, or mail the notarized application to the Motor Vehicle Bureau, PO Box 100, Jefferson City, MO 65105-0100. Missouri titling

Registration. Missouri treats the title application as the name change for the vehicle, so there is no separate required registration fee for it. A duplicate registration receipt, if you want one in the new name, is its own transaction at $8.50 plus the $9.00 processing fee.

Missouri State Taxes: One Email

This is the easiest step in the guide, and one of the easiest in the country. The Department of Revenue asks you to email your name change with your full old name, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your new name, to income@dor.mo.gov. No form, no fee, no portal account. If you would rather speak to someone, individual income tax is on 573-751-3505. Doing it before you file keeps your return from tripping over a name mismatch.

The Missouri Card With a Real Deadline

Most of this guide has no clock on it. This one does, and it is the step Missouri newlyweds forget:

CredentialWhat Missouri requires
Concealed carry permitFurnish proof of the name change to the sheriff within 30 days. The duty applies whichever permit you hold: RSMo 571.104 covers the standard five year permit, with a corrected permit issued, and RSMo 571.210 covers lifetime and extended permits, with the sheriff reporting the new name to the permit system within three days

What a Missouri Name Change Costs

What Your County Charges for a Certified Copy

Go to the Recorder of Deeds for the county that issued your marriage license. These are the published certified copy fees for the counties most Missouri newlyweds ask about:

Update Your Voter Registration

Missouri lets you do this one from the sofa: the Secretary of State’s Register to Vote page covers updating your name as well as registering, through the online voter registration application. Paper still works too, sent to your local election authority, which is your county clerk or board of election commissioners. The deadline is the fourth Wednesday before an election, and mailed forms have to be postmarked by that same day.

Licensed Professional? Tell Your Board

Nurses

The Missouri State Board of Nursing takes name changes through its own change of name and address process, with legal documentation of the name change attached. The board’s licensure rules give you 30 days to report the change.

Everyone else licensed in Missouri

Missouri licenses most other professions through the Division of Professional Registration, and each board keeps its own name change form and its own clock. Check your board’s page rather than assuming the license updates itself when the state has your new name on file elsewhere. Nothing about the Social Security or license steps above reaches a professional board automatically.

Which Married Name Can You Take in Missouri?

Three routes, and Missouri draws the line in a place that surprises people:

  • Taking your spouse’s last name. Your certified marriage certificate is the name change document. No court, no filing, no fee beyond the copies.
  • A hyphenated or combined surname. Social Security will make the change where the new surname is shown on, or can be derived from, the marriage document, and that includes a compound of both spouses’ surnames. Social Security rules
  • Moving your maiden name into the middle slot. For your Missouri license this is a court order, not a marriage certificate job. The Missouri Driver Guide lists a middle name change as requiring one.

If you do need the court, the form is the Petition for Change of Name for an adult, filed in the circuit court of the county where you live. Filing fees are set circuit by circuit rather than statewide, so ask your circuit clerk what the total is and what else they expect from you before you file.

That is the Missouri sequence: certified copies from the recorder, Social Security, one license office visit with the REAL ID waiver in mind, then the car, the tax email and your voter record. Our name change checklist covers the banks, cards and accounts that come after, our driver license name change guide covers the counter visit in more depth, and you can compare how other states handle it if you have moved recently.

Next, download and complete the IRS 8822 form. Then, mail it to the designated IRS office for your state along with a photocopy of your marriage certificate. The Internal Revenue Service does not require you to file this free form. But, it ensures your married name is on record before tax returns are issued. Well worth it in our opinion!

State Department

Next up is changing your name with the State Department. They have three different forms for you to complete, based on your passport status. The forms are the DS-11, the DS-82, and the DS-5504. After selecting and completing the correct form, file it with your current passport, your certified marriage certificate, two passport photos, and the listed processing fee.

U.S. passports take approximately 5-6 weeks to be processed and issued. So, it is important to check your calendar for any upcoming international travel before filing to change your name on your passport.

Alabama Driver’s License

Ready for a new Alabama license in your married name? Unlike many states, the Alabama DMV does not need to see your new SS card to change your name on your driver’s license. This means you can apply for your new license as soon as you’d like!

You must apply for your Alabama license in person, with your current driver’s license, certified marriage certificate, and proof of residence if your address has recently changed. This is the only government agency that does same day married name change processing. So, you’ll walk out with your new name on your Alabama license the day you apply!

Alabama Voter Registration

Alabama voter registration is next on your name change to do list. Complete the State of Alabama Mail-In Voter form. Then sign and send it to your County Board of Registrars. Once that’s done, you can rest assured of your eligibility to vote under your married name.

ALL Your Creditors

Handling your name change with state and federal offices is only part of the married name change process. Notifying all of your creditors is actually a much longer and less defined procedure.

First up is notifying your employer, banks, and mortgage providers of your new name. More often than not, they will require you to fill out a name change form and show your certified marriage certificate and/or new SS card to update your name in their systems.

Then, move on to notifying your credit cards, utilities, professional license boards, insurance providers, loan providers, memberships, and frequent flyer accounts. The majority of these groups will allow you to change your name over the phone or by mailing in a brief form.

Finally, update your social media accounts and any publications that come to your home. When you stop receiving mail in your maiden name, your married name is official!
