Ms. or Mrs.?

When to use Ms., Mrs., or Miss

Name change is complicated, and can make introducing or addressing a new acquaintance tricky. When do you use Miss Ms. and Mrs.? Don’t worry, as name-change experts we are happy to share the proper use of Miss, Ms. and Mrs. with you!

Historically, Mistress was the feminine version of Mister. Obviously today’s use of that term makes it completely inappropriate to introduce any woman as a mistress. Skip the use of mistress completely to save yourself a faux pas!

Mistress was eventually divided into Miss and Mrs. Miss indicated an unmarried woman, and Mrs. indicated a married woman. Over time, Miss began to be associated with young women, and calling an older unmarried woman Miss was confusing. Thus the title Ms. was created.

Technically, Ms. is a title referring to an adult unmarried woman, not a young unmarried girl, or teenager. But, just to make thinks difficult, Ms. can be used by any adult woman who is married or unmarried. The use of Ms. started in the 1950’s and really took off in the 1970’s in the midst of feminism and equality conversations.

So here’s the modern day breakdown on using Miss, Ms. and Mrs.:

-When introducing a young unmarried woman, use Miss.
-When introducing a married woman who has previously introduced herself as a Mrs., use Mrs.

-When introducing an adult women of unknown marriage status or a woman who has called herself Ms., use Ms.

4 Tips To Make Your New Year’s Name Change Resolution Happen

Name Change Resolution

Did you make a name change resolution to make your married name change a reality in the New Year? Whether you were a New Years bride or have been procrastinating for months, January is an ideal time to change your name after marriage. So, if you’ve made the decision to officially switch to Mrs. how do you get started? Below are a few tips to ensure your name change resolution actually happens this year.

Name Change Resolution Tip #1

Decide on the last name that is perfect for you. You can take your spouse’s last name, hyphenate, take two last names, take your maiden as an additional middle name, or replace your middle name with your maiden name. Undecided? Play the Married Name Game and let its patent-pending algorithm suggest your ideal married last name(s) and factor in state laws, as some states do not allow all forms of married name change.

Name Change Resolution Tip #2
Request 2-3 certified copies of your marriage certificate. This is the legal document that you will need to file with your name-change forms. Having several copies will allow you to file at several offices simultaneously, and become a Mrs. that much faster. *Trust us, the faster you go through the process, the less hiccups you will encounter.

Name Change Resolution Tip #3

Determine the filing order for your state of residence. Different states require different forms of ID to be filed first. Some want you to file with Social Security 24-48 hours before filing for your new driver’s license. Some states want to see your social security card in your maiden name to process your new driver’s license application, and still others require that you bring your new Social Security card with your new married name (which take 2 weeks to process) before they will issue your new driver’s license. Understanding the filing order where you live will help you plot where you file first, second, and third. That knowledge will also help you avoid making mistakes that can result in standing in long government office lines several times. Feel free to use our detailed married name change checklist as you map out your transition to Mrs

Name Change Resolution Tip #4

Sure we’re a little biased (it is our company) but honestly…wouldn’t you rather spend $30 to save 13 hours of tedious form research, completion, and filing? Married Name Change: Why Now Is Better Than Later

Married Name Change: Why Now Is Better Than Later

Most newlyweds wait a few months to change their names after marriage, so after the Spring/Summer wedding boom comes a flurry of name changes in the Fall. While not every woman should change her name, it is advisable for newlyweds intending to make the legal switch to Mrs. to do so as soon as they can.

Why? It’s pretty simple: the more things with your maiden name on them, the longer it will take you to change all of them to your new married name! The longer you wait to change your name, the more “stuff” you accumulate with your maiden name on it.

This “stuff” includes big things like mortgages, leases, vehicle titles, insurance policies and smaller things like airline miles and gym memberships. Outside of the entities mentioned, as the holidays approach “other stuff” lurks….stuff like holiday cards, mis-engraved gifts from family members (seriously), and company awards (I have a massive plaque showing a hyphenated last name I never took).

So, if you’re married and pondering name change, now is the time to pull the trigger. You can DIY and figure out the SS-5, IRS 8822, Passport 5504 and other government form gems using our free married name change checklist or save 13 hours of name-change form research, completion, and filing by using the MissNowMrs online name change service. We condense the 13 hour process of becoming a Mrs. into 30 minutes for $30…..which seems like a very nice pre-holiday gift for you from you!
