Name Change After Marriage & Voting

Name Change After Marriage & Voting

Newlywed and trying to figure out how name change after marriage & voting impact each other? It is very important to understand how changing your maiden name may affect your ability to vote in the presidential election. This isn’t a scary article. It’s a heads up so you can exercise your right to vote regardless of your name-change status!

Every state has different voter identification laws. But, most require photo ID in the name listed on your voter registration records. If you’ve already begun changing your name and have updated your voter registration with your new married name, you’re in the clear! You can rest assured that come Election Day you can cast your ballot and participate in electing our new president.

If you’re planning to change your name, but haven’t filed any legal paperwork for a new driver’s license or U.S. Passport in your new married name, you should consider waiting to change your name until after the election. This will ensure that your forms of ID match voter records and you will be able to vote without issue.

What if all of your identification documents have been changed to your married name, but your maiden name is still on file with the voter registration office?

Option 1: You can call the office to see if you can update your name on your registration. Depending how close you’re cutting it they should be able to assist you.

Option 2: Be prepared to sign an affidavit on the poll sheet asserting you are the same person.

Now that you know your options…take the avenue that is best for you, but please vote. Countless brave women made tremendous sacrifices to ensure you had the right, as a woman, to elect government officials. Make them proud ladies!

Married Name Change & Voting | What You Need to Know

Married Name Change & Voting

Today’s the day for midterm election voting and women all over the United States are lining up to cast their votes.  If you’re newlywed and in the process of changing your name, this may affect your voter experience.  Where you are in the process and which forms you filed when will determine which name you can vote under. We’ve got the scoop on married name change & voting.

If you’ve filed a voter registration form to update your name, you should be able to vote under your new married name.  That is as long as you filed that form two or more weeks ago. The voter registration office needs time to process your request and amend their digital records.  If you haven’t filed a voter registration form, but did update your name on your state driver’s license check the form you completed.  Many states have a section on their driver’s license forms that allow you to update your voter information along with your license/ID.

If you have yet to file any of your name change forms, you should vote under your maiden name. Or vote with the name currently listed on your voter registration card. Confused?  A quick call to your state voter registration office can clarify which name you’re voting under.

Now that you know the ins and outs of Married Name Change & Voting. Whatever your political party and name change status, go rock the vote ladies. It’s a right that our predecessors fought for!

Potential Name Change Voter Woes

We’ve heard a symphony of name change voter woes over the years. As you know, many women in the United States opt to change their names after marriage.  The ideal scenario is to change your name right after your wedding on every identification document you have, down to your gym membership card. While this is the ideal, it rarely happens.

Day-to-day newlywed life and its balance of work, love, friends, family, etc leaves little room for standing in long office lines until you’re an official Mrs.  Until recently, there weren’t too many consequences to partially changing your  name, but times they are a changing.

One of the new possible consequences of halfway changing your name: not being able to vote. I just read an article in the Columbia Daily Tribune and the author is very concerned about a mandate regulating what forms of ID are considered acceptable proof of citizenship before you can cast a ballot.  The mandate in Missouri would require any person who wanted to vote to show a valid driver’s license or U.S. passport in their legal name.

That can be a bit sticky for a woman who changed her name with Social Security, but not on her driver’s license and/or passport.  Should the mandate pass, there will probably be a mad dash to the DMV to make the necessary updates, or scads of ladies turned away on election day due to mismatches.

The moral of the story is, if you change your name after marriage be sure to do it completely!  Using a name change service like MissNowMrs can streamline the process and save you hours of time and costly future headaches.
